from journalist to lawyer to writer

I write novels and short stories,
from a life spent watching people closely.

I came to fiction late, after four decades practicing law. Eight books since 2017, with another underway. My stories live where I have — California, the Bay, a little of LA, and the odd corner of Dubai or Moscow when I can justify the trip.

Tommie W. Whitener

I write novels and short stories. After previous careers in journalism and the law — UCLA undergrad, UC Hastings for law school, and forty-five years in practice, first criminal defense, then family — I came to fiction late but with passion. Eight books published since 2017. Drawing on world experiences in California and from Dubai to Russia for inspiration, and with a lifetime of enthusiastic reading as background, my writings feature people as they really are: by turns loving and loved, idealistic and endearing, and, unfortunately, at the same time, deeply flawed.
